Group Discussion

Group Discussion (GD) is a part of the recruitment process for many leading companies.  It is a hiring technique applied by most organizations to select an ideal candidate for a particular job role.

Basically, it is an informal discussion in which candidates with similar academic qualifications or related educational backgrounds, discuss a topic. So, it is sometimes called a ‘leaderless discussion’. The topic of discussion is generally provided by a moderator or a panel of moderators. And suitable candidates are picked out from the ensuing discussions which are monitored by the Moderator(s).

Through the process of Group Discussions, the Employer is able to look for a number of desirable personality traits of the candidates.

Therefore, the very purpose of conducting a Group Discussion (GD) round is to test the applicants’ communication skills, topic knowledge, thought process and their leadership skills to assess among other criteria whether the candidate is suitable for recruitment.

The Moderator may also look for reasoning ability, flexibility, assertiveness, initiative, creativity, inspiring ability, team spirit and listening skills. Though the required skills may vary according to the nature of the advertised job, the desired core skills will remain the same.
